Welcome aboard with
Self Awareness In Leisure (SAIL), a program designed to bring full
therapeutic benefits of sailing and team building to those
with disabilities, youth at risk, businesses, families,
friends, and everyone. |
|
|
  |
|
Utilizing therapeutic sailing and recreation
(active treatment) increases cognitive functioning and ability to cope with life stresses. Persons with
disAbilities,
youth, and the general public benefit cognitively and
physically through sailing and recreational therapy
interventions. Sailing applied with recreational therapy specifically supplies a host
of skills that one would generally never experience or learn in
any other medium.
Skills learned include but
are not limited to; boating and marine safety; environmental
awareness, particularly related to the wind and weather; respect
for and cautions related to marine life; basic seamanship;
leisure independence; and appropriate leisure selection and
coping skills. And with our group sailing adventures, skills
also encompass the basics of sailboat cruising, reducing risky
behaviors through sailing as a team, and the results of team
cohesiveness...

|
|
Our
therapeutic sailing program is organized into three successive
steps yet each can be utilized as a stand
alone program.
Step 1 is our intro to the basics of sailing via
our sailing simulator and radio controlled model sailboats
and
has become very popular with both youth and adults
select indoor sailing video).
The radio controlled model sailboat segment can be performed during the winter in
a indoor pool or during good weather outside.
Step 2 is our
get wet and practice what you learned in step one via hands on
sailing on our (or your) our small sailboat (8'-13'.
Step 3 is out sailboat cruising adventure aboard the Windwalker (also
known as the Lake Cat; click here to see videos).
Throughout these programs
recreational therapy and rehabilitation counseling techniques
are applied.
|
 |
|
 |
All courses
are taught at the highest level of professionalism and are
facilitated by recreational therapists, rehab counselors, and US
Sailing certified instructors with years of experience working
in marine environments, with persons with disAbilities, youth at
risk, and others
disAbled & other sailing videos).
All courses/programs of course are accessible to persons with most types
of disAbilities; please contacts us before signing up for our
programs to make sure we can accommodate a particular
disAbility. |

Recreational Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling, & Marine ADA Consulting |
|
Through Self Awareness In Leisure (SAIL) Recreational Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling,
and marine based ADA consulting can be utilized.
Recreational Therapy also known as Active Treatment is a way to lessen the negative effects of
physical disability,
secondary disabilities due to lack of physical and cognitive activity, depression, and other health or medical related issues.
Utilizing Rehabilitation Counseling
adds additional cognitive treatments to lesson the above mentioned
effects.
Recreational Therapy and/or
Rehabilitation Counseling modalities are also useful for those who need medical clearance to participate
in recreational/leisure activities.
ADA (American with Disabilities Act) marine based consulting is provided
to help institutions, agencies, business, and others to be ADA
compliant. Our consulting services are especially useful for businesses
and the public in general who want to make their marina, dock, boat,
etc. accessible to individuals with disAbilities.

Sailing
Simulator |
This is a
very popular program. Through the use of a Sailing
Simulator participants will learn to sail, adjust sails,
establish flow, steer a boat in the groove, tack, and jibe,
etc. This is an
innovative no pressure way of learning the basics of
sailing and/or preparing to sail a full size sailboat
before venturing onto water.
IN
ADDITION
If you
have access to a swimming pool or outdoor body of water,
we will add, free of charge, our
Radio Controlled model sailboat clinic. This
component gives the added benefit of practicing what you
have learned on the sailing simulator, thus increasing
recall of skills learned, and at the same time having a
whole heap of fun! |

STEP 3 - LAKE OR OCEAN ADVENTURE
SAILING |
|
With either our LAKE or OCEAN adventure,
participants will acquire the skills to sail a
cruising sailboat over several days. Aboard the
Windwalker, a 33’ high performance cruising
catamaran, participants will learn the
ins and outs of sailboat cruising, and gain
abilities and memories that will be used for the
rest of their lives. This trip is
unlike any offered in the world and is an active
hands on sailing adventure with all the excitement
of a river rafting trip.
With the
LAKE ADVENTURE
participants will sail on beautiful Lake Coeur
d'Alene, Lake Pend Oreille, or Priest Lake (all
these lakes are rated among the top 10 most
beautiful lakes in the continental US) with miles of shoreline, extensive
bays and rivers, and abundant animal and marine
life.
Camp
in the bays and explore the wonders of a
beautiful lake. Participants will learn to sail on
inland waters which supply their own set of
challenges, such as adjusting to consistent
shifting winds and fluctuating thermal winds; this
will increase wind awareness and how to keep flow
attached to sails. Participants will gain more appreciation and
understanding of sailing on inland waters, and will
be better prepared to sail in areas of the world
with similar conditions whether on inland or ocean
waters.
With the OCEAN ADVENTURE
you’ll discover the great beauty of the Twin Harbors
area (Grays & Willapa Harbors). It is also
delightfully common to see some of the following: seals, whales, otters,
elk, pileated woodpeckers, flying squirrels, the
rare Van Dyke’s salamanders, etc.
Willapa Bay is the second largest estuary on the
Pacific Coast and includes more than 260 square
miles of water surface. Participants will camp on or near
Long Island - the Pacific Coast's largest estuarine
island. This island includes a rare 274-acre remnant
of old growth lowland coastal cedar forest. Many of the
red cedar trees in this grove are more than 900
years old!
In 1788 Robert Gray discovered his name sake Grays
Harbor aboard the Lady Washington (a replica of this
ship is moored in Grays Harbor - this ship was used
in the movie "Pirates of Caribbean"). Grays Harbor
is home to shell Island, one of the largest harbor
seal colonies on the west coast, and the largest
charter fishing fleet in the Pacific Northwest.
Participants must be able to swim or
be comfortable in a life jacket while in the water.
A comprehensive booklet is supplied with info about
the course, location info, gear needed, etc.
ATTENTION - LAKE & OCEAN ADVENTURE: Due to
the weather conditions, tides, currents, wildlife
migrations, and variety within these marine
environments - participants will
possibly see more or less than is stated here in.
Also weather will dictate if we will sail full
length of the lake, if we sail in one
harbor or two, and on the ocean itself.
