Welcome aboard! SAILING THE INLAND NORTHWEST is a group of sailors who primarily sail Hobie 16's with and without Trapseats, Hobie Adventure Islands and Waves (Official Hobie Fleet 926), Snarks, various trailerable keelboats, Access Dinghies, and RC Model Sailboats, & Hobie Mirage Kayaks typically with sails...

Sailing the Inland NW welcomes all sailors no matter their age, physical disAbility, or skill level. Sailing the Inland NW supplies no transportation, safety support; has no official venue (a club on wheels). If you need to learn to sail contact Its Tiller Time Sailing School (click here for lessons), if you need disAbility related support while sailing contact Self Awareness In Leisure (click here). Our club is a means by which local trailerable sailors stay connected and coordinate sail get-togethers.

Sailing the Inland NW's disAbled program is collaborative effort with Self Awareness In Leisure, which supplies extensive disAbility related support beyond what our club is able to do. We supply no support for cognitive disabilities and mental illness, but do some programs in collaboration with other agencies that do supply support (contact us for details).

We have several organized events each year (see schedule below) and primarily send out sailing get-togethers notices via our email news group and forum.

Our non-profit club/association is primarily supported by contributions from individuals and businesses, and grants. Funding received helps support our disAbled and Abled-Body sailing team via boats and gear, staffing, and more...

We do not organized events and activities on Sunday!

ACCESSIBLE / disAbled SAILING

Sailing the Inland Northwest motto is "Sailing for Everyone" - Sailors with disAbilities are an integral part of this club and its activities. Funding received by this club is primarily used to support our disAbled sailing efforts.

2009 Events Synopsis by Miles Moore, commodore...

2009 was a mixed bag of success and failure: I have been so pleased with the growth of the club and the new interest from persons with disAbilities in sailing. Below is a quick synopsis of 2009. In 2009 I established a new sailing forum (see link on our club website) to help us all stay connected; so please be supportive and patient as it gets rolling. We would love to hear from you there! Also to keep us connected is an email news group and new members are being added to it each month. The big news is that the disAbled sailing program was reintroduced in 2009, and 2010 will be the big year for this program. The difficult challenge right now for the club is the economy hitting a lot of people in the bank account and so people are traveling less, etc. Hopefully this economy will improve and we all blessed with more abundance. Even so, sailing is one of the most economical marine based activities of all; the use of wind is free...

North Idaho College: In Oct. 2009 North Idaho College (NIC) administration informed me that all the boats used in my program would be charged to be on the beach and there would be fees to run our programs on the beach (now that they have their own boats and no longer need to use mine for rentals and lessons they teach). In addition stricter policies would be applied to all events taking place on the beach. After years of supporting NIC and sailing from this location this is the thanks we get. So with that news the Lake Cat is looking for a new home (already have some options). This change of policy does not affect our club because our club has always been a traveling one and really it only affects the Lake Cat and makes us have to move our events. So you could look at this as bad or good news, I feel its good news as it makes me in particular look for new and exciting venues to run events, etc. and makes our club truly an Inland NW club.

March 3-5 in Coeur d'Alene - We ran an indoor sailing clinic for the Idaho Assistive Technology conference in Coeur d'Alene Idaho for persons with disAbilities; it was a resounding success, with 30 plus youth participating. Not much to say other than a lot of kids got introduced to sailing with much enthusiasm. Next year at the same time we will do this again in Boise Idaho.

April 25 Hobie kayak demonstrations  - In association with the Coeur d'Alene Kayak Club, Miles with SAIL Marine provided a kayak demonstration, particularly the Hobie Adventure Island (AI). There was a low turnout due to the poor weather. Still several people got to try out the AI and even if only one person tries it that is one more person that has experienced Hobie sailing.

June 13th Sailing Festival Regatta on Lake Coeur d'Alene - We had a nice turnout of 4 Hobie 16's, 2 AI's, 1 F18, & 3 Waves, 1 Weta trimaran, and Mitch Robinson brought his Venture 23 keelboat. I was disappointed in the keelboat turnout as 6 boats were suppose to come. This was the second time we have ran a Hobie & Monohull regatta on this lake (2008 was the first time in 23 years that Hobie's raced in an official regatta in this area). The course was set near the beach so people could watch the event. The first place winner of this event was David Farmer on his F18 but close on his tail was a Hobie 16. Next years regatta will be held on Liberty Lake, WA.

October off the beach party - We had a low turnout for the get-the-boats-off-the-beach-day. Again the weather was not great and there were less people keeping their boats on the NIC beach this year. This was the last year that I will officially run this event at the NIC beach. Due to vandalism becoming a problem on the beach there will be even less boats on the beach for 2010.

Oct-Dec. Frost Bite Sailing - Its November now and the plan for the rest of the year is to do some model boat sailing and AI sailing. Keep an eye out on the forum and read the email news group for notices of get-togethers.

Other activities - Besides the above mentioned events via our forum notices, we had other activities at Priest Lake, Lake Pend Oreille, and other locations. It is my hope that soon club members will use this forum more to inform other club members of trips they would like others to join them on. Please feel free to post other interesting sailing news and ideas, etc.

2010 - The good news is 2010 is already looks as though it will be a spectacular year even without access to the North Idaho College beach facilities. A new possible site for the Lake Cat to moor on Lake Coeur d'Alene and new opportunities for it on other lakes would never have developed without NIC kicking us off the beach. Another positive is that the Lake Cat will be in a new location which is much less likely to receive vandalism. Because we are a club on wheels, not being at NIC is not a big deal. Plus in 2010 we will have our main regatta at Liberty Lake, then a big activity at Lion Head State Park on Priest Lake, in addition to other events. 2010 will be a fabulous year for the club!

For 2010 I will, of course, be focused on the disAbled/accessible sailing program, but will also be working on growing the Hobie, Sea/Super Snark, and Keelboat fleets. If you have a particular love for a type of sailboat then by all means build that fleet and I will do what I can to support you.
