Space is limited. Class schedule at the bottom of this page will indicate outdoor or indoor class locations.

Keelboat & Catamaran - Boat Brands change from year to year...

CRUISING / NAVIGATION / TEAM BUILDING
Prerequisites: None (course 105 recommended)
Description: Participants can take this course as just an adventure trip, team building program, or as a learn-to-sail/cruise course. Learn to sail and navigate a sailboat of up to 37' with auxiliary power in moderate to high winds and marine conditions. This course applies to all types of sailing, i.e. keelboats & cruising/performance multihulls.

200 LAKE CRUISING / NAVIGATION

205 COASTAL CRUISING / NAVIGATION

With either the 200 or 205 courses you'll become a proficient cruising sailor. You'll sail aboard the Windwalker, our 33’ high performance cruising catamaran. If you are a sailor wanting to learn the ins and outs of sailboat cruising, this trip is for you. You will get to sail between 5 knots and 25 knots. This trip is unlike any offered in the world and is more like a river rafting trip than a cocktail cruise, so be prepared for active hands on adventure/sailing. Space is limited so sign up early.

Expand on the skills you learned in our 100/105 courses. The 200 course helps you learn to be proficient in shifting winds and lake conditions where as the 205 course helps you learn to handle stronger ocean winds and currents.

If your corporation, agency, group is seeking a team building experience then our 200/205 course aboard the Windwalker will give you the outcomes you need. This course is facilitated by our Recreational Therapist/Rehabilitation Counselor and US Sailing certified sailing instructor.

With the course 200 you will sail on beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene. Lake Coeur d'Alene has miles of shoreline, many bays and rivers, and extensive wildlife such as bald eagles, osprey, elk and black bear. Sailing on any of this lake is a one of a kind adventure.

With course 205 it is common to see some of the following: seals, whales, otters, elk, pileated woodpeckers, flying squirrels, the rare Van Dyke’s salamanders. You’ll discover the great beauty of The Twin Harbors area (Grays & Willapa Harbors).

Willapa Bay is the second largest estuary on the Pacific Coast and includes more than 260 square miles of water surface. You will camp on or near Long Island - the Pacific Coast's largest estuarine island. This island includes a rare 274-acre remnant of old growth lowland coastal forest. Many of the red cedar trees in this grove are more than 900 years old!

In 1788 Robert Gray discovered his name sake Grays Harbor aboard the Lady Washington (a replica of this ship is moored in Grays Harbor - this ship was used in the movie "Pirates of Caribbean"). Grays Harbor is home to shell Island, one of the largest harbor seal colonies on the west coast, and the largest charter fishing fleet in the Pacific Northwest.

ATTENTIONS: Due to the weather conditions, tides, currents, wildlife migrations, and variety within these marine environments, participants will possibly see more or less than is stated here in.

Class size is limited to 6 students.

Course 200 $595/person for 3 Day Lesson/Adventure with learn-to-sail handout.

For detailed learn-to-sail book add $25.

Course 205 $1195/person for 4 Day Lesson/Adventure with learn-to-sail handout.

Recommendations - Items needed during your sailing lessons

*Hat

*Sun Screen (SPF 15 or higher)

*Sunglasses

*Closed Toe Nonskid Shoes such as tennis shoes. Please NO black soles shoes. Also shoes with excessive wear can lack traction and it’s a must to have good traction on decks and docks that are sometimes wet.

*Rain Gear (you can purchase cheap ones from Target or other local box stores for example). Weather fronts can move in quickly and bring rain right in the middle of summer. At SAIL we sell moderate to high quality sailing gear. Please no waders with permanently attached boots (if you fall in with waders you will sink).

*Foul Weather Gear. For our 100 Dinghy course you will need cloths that you can get wet in and a towel; you will get wet when doing capsize recovery. For course 105 you can use a simple rain coat or water proof poncho, while wearing layered clothing underneath. A spray jacket/top is advisable for both our 100 and 105 courses. Contact us for prices at www.sailcda.com. For our 200 Lake or 205 Coastal Cruising courses only high end rain gear/foul weather gear such as the styles we sell that are specifically designed for cruising/sailing will do. Low end gear will work for a few hour cruise, etc. but of course will not do for a four day lake/coastal cruising. Related to our coast trips weather fronts can move in quickly, bringing rain and extreme weather at anytime and during any season. At SAIL we sell high end foul weather sailing gear. Visit us at www.sailcda.com.

*Wear loose clothing that allows for free movement that will keep you warm. Dress in layers!

*On warm days wear reflective, light and breathable clothing. Men are not allowed to NOT wear a shirt during our classes.

*Extra clothing such as dry socks, etc in a bag.

*It’s a good idea to bring some sailing gloves or biking glove to help with holding onto the ropes and preventing possible rope burns (also bring cold weather gloves for spring, early and late summer, and fall).

*Water to drink and snacks/lunch/food.

*Bring your own medication if appropriate and check to see if the medication will have any pre-cautions such as making you sensitive to the sun. Always consult you doctor before participating in any activity.

*Always tell those who know you well when you are leaving, where you are going, and when you will return (its called a float plan).

*When participating in our Coastal Cruising trip/adventure a detailed list of items to bring will be supplied.

10 Commandments of Racing Rules.....

1. AVOID COLLISIONS! Racing rules are defensive to prevent collisions - not racing "tactics"
2. PORT TACK (sails bent toward starboard/right side of boat & wind coming over port side) KEEPS CLEAR OF STARBOARD TACKERS - STARBOARD (sails bent toward port/left side of boat & wind coming over starboard side).
3. WINDWARD KEEPS CLEAR OF LEEWARD. WINDWARD - boat up wind of you. LEEWARD - boat down wind of you or below you.
4. BOAT TACKING OR JIBING KEEPS CLEAR OF ONE THAT IS NOT.
5. BOAT ASTERN KEEPS CLEAR OF ONE AHEAD.
6. IF YOU GAIN RIGHT OF WAY, OR CHANGE COURSE, GIVE OTHER BOAT TIME TO KEEP CLEAR.
7. THE INSIDE BOAT(S) AT TWO BOAT LENGTHS FROM THE MARK IS/ARE ENTITLED TO "ROOM TO ROUND" THE MARK.
8. A BOAT THAT IS BACKING UP OR NOT RACING KEEPS CLEAR.
9. IF YOU HAVE VIOLATED A RULE, TAKE A PENALTY (usually 720 degree turns - Tack & Jib twice).
10. IT IS BETTER TO GIVE WAY THAN TO SPEND HOURS IN A PENALTY ROOM.

Advice (learn by experience)! Especially when you are not familiar with other racers on the course in a race with a number of relative novices: TALK to other boats and tell them what you are going to do rather than SURPRISE them with a big MISTAKE! Hail them, i.e. use your turn-signalsJ!
